Notes from the Federal Palace As at 31 December 2024, 826,700 Swiss citizens were registered with a competent Swiss representation abroad, 1.6% more than in 2023. The largest communities live in Europe, chiefly in the countries neighbouring Switzerland: there are 212,100 in France, 101,000 in Germany and 52,600 in Italy. Outside Europe, the main countries of residence are the United States (84,700 people), Canada (41,000) and Australia (26,600). Three quarters of the Swiss Abroad hold more than one nationality Three quarters of the Swiss Abroad, 617,600 people, have at least one other nationality. Since 2017, this number has risen more quickly than for those with a single (Swiss) nationality (+10.2% as against +9.4%). Overall, the proportion of Swiss people with multiple nationalities living abroad is the highest among the under-18s (85%), then those aged between 18 and 64 (75%), and finally those aged 65 and over (65%). The proportion of Swiss people with multiple nationalities is the highest in Latin America and the Caribbean (84%), Oceania (81%) and North America (79%). Argentina and Chile have the highest percentages, at 95% and 92% respectively. On the other hand, there are fewer Swiss people with multiple nationalities registered in Asia and Africa (63% and 66% respectively). Thailand has the lowest proportion, at 37%.
